for some reason, my tank water is yellowish, like tea
i have two pieces of driftwood, but they do not leak out tanins anymore, i did two partial water changes, about 20 percent each and the tint hasnt changed, what should I do?

it would seem they actually do ;)
as the rallyman said, more carbon and change it more often.
 
i dont think tey leak because I took both of them out, one at a time and left them in a bucket for 1 day and a half each, and the water was clear like I just put it in.
 
unless your driftwood is fake, it leaks tannins in the water.

if your LFS sold you some maricle "non tannin" driftwood (i saw some before) then they lied....

you usually need to soak your driftwood for at least 3 days if you do not want alot of the tannins to leak into the water.

no. at some point in the life of driftwood, the tannins will leach out completely. however, if the water in a tank is tea colored as described above, chances are the wood is still leaching.
 
seeing as how my peeing in the pool post was deleted I'll add something usefull. Recently I had a piece - no, a huge piece of driftwood in my 150 that was rotting and messing up my water chemistry. Someone suggested that because it was such a nice piece, and it would be a shame to waste it - I should try drying it and sealing it with a clear acrylic paint. It's the dead of winter, and I don't have enough room inside to do this, so I can't speak of success or failure, but it seemed like a good idea to me.
 
I would think it's the driftwood too. The reason why the water hadn't changed color when you put them in a bucket with water for a day in a half is because there was no filter running for circulation nor the rest of the dynamics that are in the tank.
 
try using hot water and a airline on a compressor in the bucket. I bet the heat from the aquarium is "opening the pores on the wood" enough to release its second wave of tannins. A good way to get it out, is get a pot that one would use on a deep fryer and just fill it up wiht water, get it to a rolling boil, drop your driftwood into it, and let it boil.... and boil... and boil....... then dump out the water afte a couple of hours or three. and repeat.... Just cook the hell out of it. Like for six hours. And then come back and do it some more.... Just keep cooking it till the wood looks grey or white. I geruntee that once you do this... your wood wont leach any more tannins.... ever... again... BE SURE THOUGh that you use a NEW POT with no grease from deepfrys. Or if you use an old one... wash the heck out of it, and bleach the heck out of it. and then wash the heckout of it again... NO GREASE. GREASE = BAD.
