My gsp do not seem to like snails at all, I drop them in, the puffers chase tehm and then ignore them on the bottom of the tank...then the snails crawl off to hide & die somewhere presumably :confused: I give them whole mussels that I freeze & thaw and they do nibble on the shells from the mussels. Will this keep their beaks trimmed or should I continue to try and force the snails upon them?

ahhh poo, i just spotted a gill fluke on tweedle dee. Off to treat my tank i go. I'm using something I picked up just incase called parasite clear by tank buddies. oh the joys of fish

You could try holding onto the snails with tweezers and holding it into the water so you know they can bite into it. Thats what I have to do with my valentini puffer because if I drop it in he will chase it but then looses it. Its kind of hard to hold them with tweezers since the snails are so small but its doable, it did take a few times to get it right with my puffer though. You could also try and smash some of their favorite foods into the snail shell with a toothpick.

nibbling on the mussel shell should help but if they were my puffers I would try and get them used to snails too, just makes me feel better and I would hate to ever have to perform some dentistry on any of my puffers!
 
thanks, i figured as much. I can't wait til poor little tweedle dee's gill flukes are gone. Just noticed the little red strings poking out of his gills and dropped in some parasite tablets. 48 hours from now I get to do a big water change and dose again. Then hopefully smooth sailing from this point onwards.
 
I got two GSPs about 2&1/2 months ago. One died shortly after but the second limped along until last night. The first sign of trouble was one of the gills clamping shut. So I treated for gill flukes. Nothing. So after a while I treated for internal parasites. Things got a little better. Then the symptoms appeared again. I treated the water this time with CopperSafe. The fish then did well for 3 weeks and then stopped eating, twitched, lost color, and became sunken and emaciated. I did a 50% water change to try and get out the last of the copper (I had done regular water changes before) and treated again with JungleMate. The fish began eating regularly but did not put on weight. Last night I noticed a bulge just off center of it's belly, today it was dead. I have a 20 gallon tank, nitrate, nitrites and amonia are zero or barely readable, ph is 8.1, salinity is 1.017, temperature is 79 - 81 dgrees F. I have a second puffer that I got last week and do not want this to happen again. Can someone please tell me what went wrong?

I'm trying to read a lot of stuff on you guys' GSP's because my bro wants some and I am hesitant.
