Yo guys. If any of you are from Monster Fish Keepers you know me as AU_Arowana-RG. Yeah, Monster Fish aren't the only thing going for me. I can easily appreciate the simple joys of a simple comm tank. Heck, I even have one right now!

Which leads me to my question. I'd like some advice on picking a good characin (Tetra, Characidium, whatever) for my current "community tank" (It's actually a large ceramic pot).

The only real specifics I have are that:

1) Can live on its own or will only need at most 3 other fish in order to survive, behave well (No Neons and Cardinals please).

2) Won't mind living without plants/sparse planting.

Any advice? :grinno:

The gallonage may 35 or 40 Gallons. Can't tell as I have a problem measuring gallons from non-quadrilateral shaped "aquariums", but to be on the safe side, I'll add another criteria:

3) Must not exceed 3 inches in length.

Ever looked into the "White Cloud Mountain Minnow" very versatile little fish.

I do want to clarify a bit of a mis-understanding:

Being a member on AC is not limited to "simple community tanks". Many of us have very complex bio-spheres. We have community tanks to monster tanks. From tiny tanks to some of several hundred gallons. We have micro-fish to monster fish, although off-hand I personally don't know of anyone with a tank-buster. Some here don't even have fish! In spite of the differences we do have a fond appreciation of other members set-ups and their opinions and experience. We are neither snobs nor exclusive.

The only difference between us and MFK is that the majority don't have monsterfish. We willingly share with anyone that asks if we have an answer.

Welcome to the AC side of MAN!

Thanks for the info. I do know that this isn't strictly just about simple tanks, just that I've been so much around monsters that some might label me as a monster-only guy. I'm not that.

Yes, I've considered White Clouds, but I'd really love to have some fish from the order characiformes as well. Already got 2 cypriniformes in the form of two long-fin danios inside AND would pobably get some white clouds later.

I have a couple of Serpae Tetras that seems to do well without being in a large school. They aren't as active as danios are. Some may find them a bit boring due to the lack of activity. The black markings with the reddish body make for an interesting appearance. My favorites have to be the Silver Dollars but they get large and do better in a school

We really don't label anyone as being anything other than a fellow AC'er. As I said above, there are many here with monsters as well as micros. Enjoy the hobby and the stay. Feel free to make yourself at home.

My favorites are Flame tetra, black phantom tetra, red phantom tetra, bloodfin and "orange" flame tetra

I think pretty much any tetra WANTS a group, but there are some that will fare better with a small group than others. I've seen black skirt/white skirt tetras pretty content with as few as two.
