i've been raising zebra danio fry...i have about 250+ fry in little breeder boxes for now in a 10 gallon...they were rescued from death in a laboratory...and i can't give them away because they are partly transgenic. no, they don't glow, but their brains have been partly transfected to glow.

anyways, i read that you can put zebra danio in container ponds. i live in los angeles, and it is warmer than most places during the winter and such...could i put them there once they're bigger..with an air pump and some plants for natural biological filtration?

:soda:

Zebra Danios in the wild can be found in rice patties in the SE part of the Asian continent. I think LA weather would be alright for them so long as they get put in the shade. Mine have survived temperature fluctuations from 69 to 80 degrees for a whole week b4.

Cool fish, btw. Glad you did such a heroic action and saved them. :D

As long as the water temps don't get below 60 they should be okay.

Provide plenty of oxygen.

I am near Laguna Beach, and have the same idea: identify the "subtropical" species that survive year-round in this area. I just dug a 500-gallon pond and will have it done by Labor Day 2005. Hope to keep big groups of danios and white clouds ALTHOUGH typical aquarium references do not offer detailed discussion of coldwater environments.
How did you danios do over winter? Did your water temp reach 55 degrees? Or 50 degrees? Ocean temps go down to 53-54 degrees--how much colder can a pond get?
Thanks for your thoughts and GOOD LUCK with your special horde of danios.
