Zebra Rock and pH

Hi all,

I have some red-and-white striped rock that was sold at my LFS as "zebra rock." I decided to do a test to see if it would mess with my pH at all. It's been sitting in a bucket filled with water for about 24 hours. My water comes out of the tap at about 7.6. When I checked the pH of the water in the bucket, it read about 8.2.

Since I had the kit out, I decided to check the pH in my tank (about a month old), which I haven't checked in a couple of weeks. The last time I checked, it was the same as my tap water, 7.6. However, the pH of my tank water is now 8.2 - the same as the water that the rocks have been sitting in.

Am I missing something here? Did the zebra rock cause the rise in pH or was it some other factor. (Could it just be the fact that the water has aged? I have not tested straight tap water that has been sitting out for a day.)

I found one other post on the forum where someone stated that zebra rock would not affect my pH, but I'd just like to be sure.

I don't know my water hardness values.

Thanks for any help you might be able to provide.

Try testing the water that has been sitting out for a day without anything in it. Also look for other factors besides the zebra rock which could be affecting your Ph levels to narrow down the cause and eliminate other possibilties.
