I thinking of taking one of my 10G and converting it to keep some cichlids. My question is whats the smallest type of cichlid and how many can I keep in a 10G? Is it even wise to keep any in a 10G? I like the way some of them look but don't know there names and stuff. Since I'm just starting my search are there any recommeded links to see whats available, care and figure out compadability issues? TIA...

A pair of blue rams, a single convict (maybe), possibly a pair of kribs.

How about Shellies from Tanganyika? Some are even small enough to live comfortably in a 5 gallon.

ive seen people keep a breeding pair of convicts, and kribs in a ten gal.

Were these a pair of young Convicts in the 10 gallon or were they adults.

I would say kribs shellies or rams. The bigger the tank the easier it is however.

I would get shelldwellers but its up to u. Just about any dwarf cichlid would do fine. Shelldwellers show a lot of attitude and are very fascinating. You could get like 5 probably in there.

I'd like to keep about 3-5 in my tank so I'd guess some dwarf cichlids would be great. What do they look like? Any links to pics?

Rams are another great suggestion. They sure are pretty. I usually keep planted tanks and these would look great with plants. But then again, thats why I wanted to get into cichlids. Plants are alot effort to keep nice. Maybe a pair with a few plants would be nice. I'll have to think about it...

Now what to get??? I'll keep researching these dwarfs; these seems interesting. Thanks for your comments!

try this link, it's a pretty helpful forum to learn all you can about the dwarfs (rams included)...

Rams are great, but they are rather critical of their water conditions compared to most other cichlids, just be aware of this.

rams in a 10? i would be careful. they love perfect water, and youll have a hard time keeping a 10gal perfect. they fluctuate too much. you must be consistent on your water changes and have good filtration

Rams will work fin in a 10g, with weekly water changes. I have a pair each of Blue and Gold in 10g tanks. I originally had HOB filters but my cats kept knocking the tops off the filters and drinking out of them so I got the Eclipse 1 hoods and they work pretty well(the twin bulb ones are good for plants). I have mine fairly well planted and that seems to help keep the water clean. Mine spawn every 3-4 weeks though the shrimps seem to get most of the eggs.
