I am in the planning stage for a new reef tank- considering sizes 75g and up. I need to spend at least a couple of months doing research before I plunge.
Also, any room being rearranged to accomodate a tank this size needs lead time for a new paint job before we put the tank in.
Planning ahead well, arent I? :D

My question regards excessive noise/vibration and how/if it would affect reef inhabitants?
The primo location is against an interior wall, the *other* side of which houses our music room. The music room is home to my husbands several drum kits which are played daily.
Do not under estimate the amount of crashing and banging that takes place here... he's not playing chamber music. It's loud and the vibration palpable.

Would the noise/vibration from this activity affect reef inhabitants in a negative way at all?
I do have one other location available in our office, but it is much removed from our daily living space, and would not grace our lives nearly as continually.

Any thoughts or research available on this?

I wouldn't put the tank where it will be exposed to lots of loud music. I sometimes blast my music while cleaning, and almost every fish in every tank in the house hide. The lion fish is the only thing that doesn't stash himself into a corner. The fish can get used to steady noises, but randomly timed ones can cause stress, IMO.

I would have to agree that the noisy wall wouldn't be a great place. Noise travels 25 times faster in water and comes from all directions. If your world is as small as a tank then it could be pretty scarey I would think. And from being in a few bands myself I know just how loud those drums can get.
