Ok, I've finally decided to enter the world of live plants. Starting slow and easy with some low light plants.

I got an Anacharis Plant, and some Java Fern to attach to my driftwood and rocks.

Any suggestions , or should it be pretty self explanatory?? From what I read it sounds like you can just add water and these two plants will flourish in just about any conditions...

How much light do you have, in terms of wattage?

Get more anacharis or other low light plants, the biggest mistake that new aquatic gardeners make are starting with just a few plants. If you have aot of plant from the start, they will help control algae and do a better job at keeping the water clean.

Some other plants that you can try are:
anubias, any of them
crypts, wendtii and lutea (walkerii) are popular
java moss
hornwort

With these plants and a low light setup, you should be able to maintain them with just weekly water changes.

Not sure I just have a hood with two 4 foot flourescents, one is normal and one is spectrum.

so fewer is not better to start?? Why is that, because it won't out-compete the algae?

I definitely plan on adding some Hornwort...maybe I'll get an anubia.

Don't think I'll get Java moss I think it's ugly looking and looks like weeds.

thanks!

2 4ft fluorescents should equate to 80w, which is very low light but doable with your plant selection.

Fewer is definately not better for exactly that reason. The more plants you have in the tank, the less likely you'll encounter algae.

Ok, well I went today and got a Hornwort and a Anubia. I also bought some Iron fertilizer to help them grow.

How often should you add Iron to the tank? With every water change?
