My Remora skimmer is taking in quite a large amount of waste in its cup. Its full within 12 hrs and I mean completetely full. So full that its coming out of the top hole. I have cleaned the pump, and it wasn't really dirty. I do a water change every week. I do a 10 gallon change in my 75. Use RO only made with my own RO system. And thats another question I've got too. I have had this skimmer close to 5 yrs now and have never seen this. I even have the collection set over half way up as of now. I tried all the way but that didn't do anything to help it just put out more. I haven't really change anything in my tank. I don't use any filters at all. Anyone ever have this problem??? :help:

Is it dark gunky stuff or is most of it clear-like and water? Is it bubbling up normally? If you have one, does your connected sponge have any debris trapped inside or on it (this happened to me)? For the skimmer itself (not sure if the Remoras have it) I'd stick some tubing in the small bottom outlet hole and lead it to a large soda bottle or something similar- until you find out the source of all the waste.

You said you haven't "really" changed anything your tank- sorry to be so literal but is there anything you've changed at all since this started happening? How long has it been happening? Do you have algae at all? What do you dose with?

Only asking a lot of questions to get to the bottom of this. As I'm sure you know, 12 hours is too frequent to be emptying your skimmer cup. I didn't have to empty any of mine that frequently when they were brand new with new rock.

It'll be interesting to figure out what the underlying cause is. :)

Its usually clearlike with some foamy substance. I didn't mean I have never change anything in my tank. I meant in the last few months that this has been happening. I haven't added any fish or inverts. Theres a foam piece on the intake and it gets looking like as if coraline algea is growing in it, with a reddish tint, buts thats been that way for well over 2 years or more. I've got plent of algea on my rock especially Bubble.

how often have you been runnign it since this has been happening?
how far underwater is the pump?

Good question. Mine started really skimming the dark stuff when I put an extension on the pump so I was skimming surface water. I also had to reduce the pump from a rio 1400 to an aquaclear 802 'cause it was filling the cup with water.

It sounds to me like you need to adust your air/water intake. If you tank is established it should be collecting clear brown foam. It might take some fiddeling with to get adjusted properly. The clear plastic tube should look like you dropped a bunch of alka seltzer tabs in it. I know this is vague but, again it's just going to take some playing with.

what clear plastic tube you talking about? I have piece of reinforced hose thats attached from the skimmer to the pump. The hose is about 4 to 5 in long. I have had this setup this way for 2 or more years and all of a sudden it starts filling my collection cup in 12 hrs. Do I need to shorten the hose from the pump?

Hey atnixon! You probably just need to adust the airflow into the skimmer. The length of tube usually isn't all that relavent as most skimmers tend to have rather strong pumps.
Cheers
