Best way to measure up??

What do you guys do to measure your fish? I just put a ruler up to the glass and wait for them to come by and get a good estimate. what do you guys do???

Another good suggestion I have heard is to know the size of certain objects in your aquarium. When the fish pases that object you can get a good estimate.

Drop a plastic ruler into the tank, weighted with rocks at the ends...

I use the soft roll up ruler in my wife's sewing kit its flexible and easy to move but I like molinos idea better.
