hi all,

I recently lost a large portion of my fish to ich. I now have in my 10g,

1 dwarf gourami
3 tiger barbs (still very small)
1 khuli loach
1 african dwarf frog
1 farlowella

I lost 5 tiger barbs and 2 crabs. I've decided not to stock it as full as I had it before, but I did want to add one more fish. So last night I got a sunset gourami.

My problem: he's still floating in the bag becuase my dwarf gourami won't leave him alone. He's trying to bite him through the bag and hasn't left it since I put it in. My tank is very heavily planted, including floating plants. So there are places to hide. But I'm still afraid to release him.

Is this typical, will they chill out? Is that too many gouramis in such a small tank? I'm getting a 50g in about 3 weeks, so it won't be long. I'm just wondering though if they'll kill each other before then, or if they'll just go to seperate ends and avoid each other.

I've kept 2 dwarf gouramis in a ten gallon heavily planted tank for a while now. they seem to each stay out of each others way and I don't notice any aggression towards each other. A lot of other people have had problems with 2 or more gouramis in a ten gallon, but I think that if you have plenty of plants in the tank to breakup sightlines it can be done.

your current gourami is probably just curious as to what is in the bag, a lot of my fish will not leave the bag alone while its floating in the tank (my angels are notorious for this, as well as my puffers). one thing I've done when adding fish that may be looked at as food (because the established fish are used to food coming in from the top of the tank, and naturally think anything introduced is just that, food) is to feed the fish before I release the new fish into the tank. then I feed again to introduce the new fish (lightly both times, this isn't a meal it's just a distraction)

I'd recommend getting more khuli loaches, they like to be in groups and won't hide as much as single specimens. and tigers are notorious fin nippers in small numbers (less than 6) but I don't think you'll have enough room for 6 of them.

It's so cool to watch fish, especially gouramis and cichlids, swim up to check out the new fish.

You could rearrange the decorations in there. That way, the new fish won't be at a disadvantage, because they will all need to stake out new territories.

same thing happened for me as well. I had one 3 spot Gourami that terrorized my gold one that I bought , both for my 20 gal. I got frustrated watching that happen , so i went out and bought another tank for some of my platys and the gold gourami to have. I haven't gad too many of them and haven't been keeping fish too long, but in my experience I wouldn't try putting two inthe same tank again. They are sooo docile with all my other fish too!!!
