I will be leaving for college in 2 years (I am a sophomore in high school). I will most likely attend a 4 year college, out of state, although I might do a 2 year program first at a nearby college..in that case I would live at home for another 2 years.
I really want to get this 75 gal. aquarium. It seems like a great deal, All-Glass aquarium with wood stand and canopy all for $325. I have such a passion for aquariums and I would love to get this. Money is not a problem, I can afford it. The only issue is that I will be going to college.
Let's say that in 2 years I find a home for all the fish that I get. How hard is it to take down the whole set-up? Do you think having a 75 gal. for 2 years is worth it? i am thinking so..

You will also have it AFTER college, so go for it. 75g is a great size. BUt you are entering the mobile years, so prepare to break it down and put it up a lot. Maybe this is time to go for the bare bottom discus tank?

I never stayed in the same place for more than 6 months from the time I was 18 to about 22. It would have been a very bad idea for me, but that's just me.
Community college for 2 years is a great idea bye the way.

You can't wait to start living life until you're settled... a lot of things could happen. Why not join a local club and lend your setup to a buddy when you go to college? Or give it to an enthusiastic kid. Or set up the 75 in the biology lab at your school and start a tradition that each year a Junior and a Senior are responsible for it...

buy it, use it, then lend it.
One potential problem: I 'lent' my 55g setup to a pal while I went for a summer internship when I was 27. I presume he's still got it since I never got around to asking for it back, I kinda lost track of him, and it has been almost 20 years...

I would go for it. wetmanNY said it best.
I'm in a similar situation. I'm in the military and move every 3 years or so. I have six tanks that will come down and be moved with me. So if I waited until life settled down, I would be waiting forever.

I had a ten gallon tank that I moved everywhere during my "moving" years. I can't see doing it with a 75! But I would say get it. When you go to college you could always put it in your parents garage (?) after you break it down and get rid of the fish of course, and it will be there for you when you get back.

I'm gonna be heading off to university in two years, so I'm in much the same position. I intend to just leave my tanks where they are (except maybe afew) and leave instructions with them. My mum pretty much knows what to do already.

Fish are worth it. Buy the tank and move it when you have to.
Fish are worth it.
Next months I will be saying to myself "Fish are worth it."
I will be moving a 90, a 75, a 55, and a 20.
Fish are worth it.

Remember the fish too. It's really hard on them to move them, moreso or less-so depending on the species. I will have to move in a year and I'll try my damdest to make sure that that is the only move I'll have to make in the next 3 years with my two 30 gallons.

thank you all. I have decided that I will be getting this 75 gal. Thanks for all of your encouragement as I am sure this is a wise decision :)

Hey andy1286...
I am a college student, and I plan to go to graduate school in the mainland US (I live in Hawaii!) and I am really wanting to get a large tank... However, I am also concerned about leaving...
Hope to hear from you about what you plan to do about your college!
Aloha

im a college student, and i move my tanks every year.no big deal, just keep in mind that if you get something that grows fast, say an oscar, its tough to find them a good home being so big.
