I'm trying to figure out what kind of fish I would like when I get a 75 gal. aquarium. This is fresh water. Ultimately, I would like to use live plants. I probably want big fish. I'm thinking along the lines of cichlid, or anything else that is colorful. I would also like some kind of cat fish. I would like to use oscars or piranhas, but they won't go with the plants, right?

What would you put in a 75 gal. ?

Piranhas generally would be ok in a planted tank. The only problems you'd have with that is that when a feeding frenzy occurs some leaves will be shredded, whether your feed frozen or live. Otherwise the plants will probably help suck up the nutrients left over by the very messy piranhas and they'll appreciate the extra cover. Oscars will tear up plants in a day. Hey, they need something to do! Anyways, as far as bigger fish go, you could go with maybe just moderately sized fish. Perhaps a large school of rainbows with corydoras cats at the bottom. Otherwise maybe something more in the oddball category, like an elephant nose or bichir. These both get to be quite large.

Piranhas won't do in a 75-gal.

I suggest 2 or 3 pairs of dwarf cichlids OR a pair of dwarfs w/ a shoal of neon tetras, 3 male dwarf gouramis & a couple of cories as bottom feeders.

Alternatively, you could ditch the plants & keep an oscar (any one cichlid that doesn't grow beyond a foot) or a pair of JDs.
