If I were to buy a figure 8 puffer fish, would I be able to put in a couple cichlids in with it? If I could what kind would do well with him?

No fish should go in with it, as they are notorious fin-nippers and are best kept solitarily...plus they are BW fish, and MOST Cichlids are FW.

I wouldn't say they have to be solitary. They won't nip the fins of mollies, gobies, Monos, Scats etc in brackish. I have never kept any of my puffers in solitary confinment except for my new Target who has to be. If you post this is Brackish forum you will get much better results since they are brackish fish. Hope this helps.

cichlids- no way jose. would not work, different water conditions and the cichlids would move extremely too fast for it and pick it apart
but can put it with other brackish fish however, they dont have to be solitary. i would get the puffer and some sort of gobie like a bumblebee gobie.
