I have three very small Figure 8 puffers in a 10 gallon brackish tank (which will be upgraded when their size demands) and they spend a lot of time swimming into the side glass. The tank is not sparce by any means, it has loads of rocks and obstacles littering the tank - my question is, do I need plants (real or plastic) for them to swim around? Would having more than one puffer in a tank make them uncomfortable? The LFS approved of this set-up - is this behavior of swimming into the glass just a natural quirk of puffers?

A 10gal is too small for them NOW. You need lots of plants and switch the decor around once in a while too.

Never trust what a LFS tells you, always do your own research. They are famous for not knowing anything (and he got you to buy 3, instead of of 1)

For 3 Fig 8's, I wouldn't go less than 30+gal (that's probably a bit too low)

I have one fig 8 in a 10 now, and he paces even though theres a few plants and cave...especially when Im at my desk he goes up and down at the corner I am. But its boredom, a 10 is too small and I honestly am upgrading my guy to either a 20 or 29, depends on if I can get a good deal on ebay. I dont think keeping 3 together for too long is a good idea, and 10 gallons is way to small for especially 3, so unless you get a big tank(over 55 for when they grow up)- I'd look into giving the other two away or back to pet store. Otherwise good luck.

Maybe you're thinkg of GSPs? The rule of thumb is 15g for 1 F8 & add 10g for each extra one.

So a 29 could safely house 2 fig-8's? I never thought of adding another, but when I do upgrade to the 29 for Bullseye, I would like to add another if you think its ok. I always took Fig8's to be less aggressive compared to other puffers, but still not suitable for sharing average sized tanks.

The puffers' fins are turning kind of brown - does this mean anything?

Also, an update, I am moving two fig8s into a 29 gallon brackish tank, so they should have some space.
