View Full Version : Is pool filter diatomacous earth OK?
The brand is Dicalight and is made in California by Grefco Minerals. My filter is a Vortex Freedom filter. Can't beat the price- $17.00 CDN for 10 lbs. I figure that ought to last me about 10 years :D

It will work just fine I bought a 20lb pound bag for ten bucks it is the exact same stuff. I have beeen using it for about three years in my vortex system one filter and am very happy with it.

Pool filter DE is very, very bad for your lungs.
Wear a mask when you are dealing with it, do not open it in the house, do not open it in a windy place.
I used to use it instead of the more expensive garden DE which is used to deter slugs, but there is a difference in how it is milled in that the milling process actually makes it much sharper and dangerous if inhaled. It is very bad for your lungs. I began to notice some breathing problems after working where the DE had been used. Eventually I just bought the expensive kind and threw the other out.
With Vortex's filters, it is almost impossible to charge the filter without getting some DE into the tank. It eventually gets sucked back into the filter or just settles until the next vac. Is it bad for fish gills as well?
