Ropefish or loach of some sort? But only 1-1½"?
There's gotta be hundreds of tiger/leopard named fish.
Was it striped or spotted? "Eel like" but not an eel in what way? Did it have fins? Describe the mouth? Any more clues?
If you are serious about owning it I'd definitely go find out what it is for a proper ID, then google up some care info before deciding.
Even a phone call to the lfs could narrow down what you are looking for... at this rate we could guess forever and still get it wrong.

Description sounds like a kuhli (or coolie - depends what your used to) loach, but with tiger/leopard in the name? Could be mis-named, or could be a completely different fish!
Theres some pics of kuhli loaches on this website below, with information:
http://www.loaches.com/species_pages/kloach.html
If you go down the bottom and click on the species index, you might be able to find it if it isnt that.
Hope this helps,
Thom.
except for the tiger or lion in its name, sounds like a clown loach maybe??

Didnt you look at my link? Plenty of black/yellow fish on there...and if you could get hold of a pic of the fish (if your LFS is kind enough) then someone here will soon enough recognise it.

It's could also be a bumblebee goby which is brackish and requires ocean salt.

One thing: there are reports of them growing up to 3 metres...but they usually grow to about 2 metres.

and if you know your feet better than your metres, then 3 metres is about 10 ft

Why don't you start asking the names?
The real names...... like Odocoileus hemionus??
You'd save everyone a lot of trouble!
