I have had several pairs. Usually pretty mellow, getting along with most fish that don't have long fins and are too big to swallow. At spawning time, the male really colors up to a golden yellow dorsally, and they kick everybody out of their territory. Like an invisible wall. Only problem I had was when a male pursued a female to death when she wasn't ready to spawn and I had no extra tank.

My brother has one. Holds its own with a convict, 2 severums, and a firemouth. Cool fish. Not real territorial, but he does not get punked either.

My current pair are great.
My female goes almost completetly black when spawning.

They are quite doscile and won't instigate any trouble. They will however not back down to anything when they are protecting a claimed territory.
Mine have taken on some of my biggest fish,.....and won. It usually got to the point where the other fish would just give up on the area.

Mine spawn in waves. I won't have a brood for a few months.... then I will have a brood every three weeks for months.

Great fish. I highly recommend them.

My brother has his with severums, firemouth, and an acara. any medium aggressive cichlid would work.

I kept a trio with silver sharks(bala), clown loaches and angel fish. They are very under rated fish and quite beautiful when spawning. They are quite docile but wont take any crap.Mine loved veggis(especially peas)but had a very annoying habit of pulling out my vallis plants from the tip of the stem. For some reason they are really hard to get around here how.

I also highly reccomend them.

By the way that was rainbows I was talking about not Vieja heterospilus.

According to the info that I have found the Vieja heterospilus has had it name reclassified. Originally it was under the cichlosoma name.
Now it is classified under the name Herichthys Heterospilus.

Apparently it gets up to 10 inches in length, but is quite rare.
It is a very nice looking fish though.

caz: try a search under Herichthys Heterospilus and see what comes up.
