I semi-recently received a betta from a friend. They didn't want the fish anymore, and I felt sorry for it, so I took it in.

It's currently in a 10g tank with 3 cories. The cories are very active, when they aren't hiding, and they completely ignore the betta (and vice versa).

The betta, however, isn't doing very well. When I first got him, he had lost a good deal of color... and seems to be losing more by the day. He stays on the bottom of the tank, unless there is food about (I feed him live blood worms and freeze-dried blood worms). He occassionally (a few times a day) swims to the top of the tank (extremely quickly) to breathe, and then back to the bottom immediately. He also spends a lot of time hiding in a rock cave.

The tank stays at about 78 degrees, pH at 7. This tank has been established for more than a year. No live plants.

Could he just be getting old? He has been exhibiting this behavior for almost 2 months now.

Betta live 3-6 years, depending on how long they were kept in a little cup with poor conditions. As long as he's eating, he's probably doing okay. IME, they tend to be happier with plants to hang out in, and might be hiding in the cave to avoid water currents. Some silk plants might bring him out more.

For losing color--where? Fins, or on the body? What color is he turning?

I find that my betta always dropped a lot of color during stressful times, especially after moves. Definatly get some silk plants for him to swim in and around and to rest on. I keep my water a little cooler as well, though I don't know if that makes much difference. Sometimes it takes awhile for betts to get back into the swing of things.
