A co-worker showed me a glass tank she picked up from university surplus. Assuming she can clean it of whatever might have been in it, can she even keep fish in a tank with these dimensions?

It's about 30 inches long, and only five or six inches tall and the same front to back. What's that, maybe five gallons? She wants to keep a few zebra danios in it.

It's a nifty idea, but I just don't know if you could keep fish in it. What do you think? Should I encourage her or dissuade her?

it should be fine for danios or bettas or other river fish. Bettas like shallow water since in the wild the puddles they live in are shallow and long so i would expect this to be a great betta tank. Rivers in the wild arent that deep at some points so river fish would work too (may need a few powerheads for the river fish)

If it's that shallow, I'd definitely recommend making sure that it's covered if you're going to be putting a betta in there. Bettas can and often do jump, right out of your tank if you don't have it covered.

I would turn that into a species tank for 3 Gastromyzon.

I would buy this filter (check out the dimensions: 3"W X 3"D X 4"H): http://www.petco.com/Shop/petco_Product_R_1142_PC_productlist_Nav_222_N_24+112+30+5538_sku_925578_familyID_12148.aspx and place it at one end of the aquarium.

I don't like gravel, but it would probably work better than sand in this setup, along with a few river stones.

The single direction flow would replicate the flow of the streams where the Gastromyzon come from (Malaysia, Indonesia), but would blow the sand to one end of the tank, or just a hole at the strongest point of the flow.

I would also add a small bubble wand near the outflow of the filter, to further replicate the high oxygen content of a fast flowing stream.

A 24" T8 bulb, and a couple of aponogetons, would finish the aquarium nicely. Great... now I have to find a tank with those dimensions or make one myself. :)

great suggestions  Now I want one too! but no. I'm just starting a goldfish tank.

I rechecked her dimensions, it is only 24 inches long and has 2.8 gallons written on it. She's partial to zebras, but that's awfully small. What about sparkling gouramis?

But now I want to build one, or check out the bookshelf tank... would fit perfectly in my bathroom...

tell you what, i would love to do something like that with some superpowerheads and some smaller river fish.. i think it would be cool.
