I was just wondering about how alot of books, website, and salepeople tell you to distance certain corals from other corals on account of their stinger tenticles.... Everytime I look at a picture of a reef tank it looks like the corals are all on top of eachother, and those tanks look great.

What's the deal with Coral placement? Should they be distanced or can they be closer to eachother? I'm confused about that.

Good question! Corals touching each other means they are stinging? Or they actually sometimes sting and sometimes don't?

Corals from the same family can usually tolerate touching each other. Corals from others like LPS Hammer Corals next to Finger leathers may sting each other. It all depends on the type of coral and what it is next to. They all have varying degrees of aggression.

Also, corals can destroy each other thru chemicals they emit into the water rather than stinging with sweeper tentacles.
