hi wonder if anyone can help, i have a large piece of bogwood that looks great in my 400l tank. The problem is that after a week or so the wood starts to make the tank very cloudy(and i dont mean the tannin colour coming off). Friends say that if i coat the wood in polyurathene varnish, this will do the trick, but will this harm my fish in anyway, anyone got any ideas.thanks

i'm no expert but I would not do that in my tank

Check the product to determine if it is inert after curing. There are may resin products that can be safely used in an aquarium. Personally, I'd just scrub the wood well, soak it in a tub with frequent water changes for a week or so, and see if that improved it.

Whenever I put driftwood in my tank, I soak it in boiling hot water first. If the piece is too big, I pour boiling hot water over it several times. This gets rid of some of the silt and/or mud, plus some parasites that may be clinging to the wood.

Personally, I would never varnish the wood. Depending on what it's made of, it may leach unwanted chemicals into the water even after it's cured. Also, it just doesn't look natural IMO.

If you're going to go ahead and varnish it anyway, at least make sure it is bone dry inside and out before coating it... wait a week or so to be sure.
