The sal-vin-EYE (Salvini) gets to be 220 mm (~8-9") max.
They feed on macroinvertebrates and other small fishes...and live amongst submersed trees and love moderate- to fast-moving waters.

thanx man. think these would be good for me or no? my lfs said he might be able to get rainbow cichlids, and for me to talk to him sunday, so im on pause till then. if not i have been lookig at convicts, and blue acaras, not sure if these two go together, but if they dont i will pick on of those and go from there :)

They're "semi-aggressive" by most profiles, so they should be watched while in a community tank, but they'd probably do fine with the Cons...as long as the Cons are large enough.
Agreed with chilldawg, if you do end up getting one let me know how it turns out. l've recently been looking into them as well, I am either gonna try them or rainbow's in my 150
well if i cant get my rainbow cichlids, i have come up with this list of possibilites
port cichlid
blue acara
salini cichlid
green/gold severum
convict
firemouth
well thats what i have for now :) let me know your opinions please :) btw i know i cant have all of them, its just what im looking at for now hehe

Cons and FMs sound cool...with a Salvini in there, it may be pretty interesting!

BLUE ACARAS!! blue acaras are nice they have great coloring, esp the iridescent blue they have.
cons and firemouths are too common IMO. my brother got a tank with them as you can see in my signature. and i got a tank of blue acaras.
yea salvinis get about 7-9" and they are moderately aggressive.
one more to add to the list, not sure but buffalo head maybe?

Only if you can keep the tank very low in metabolites.
I'd stick with your new world idea you have going, I like it, but thats just my .02

Dang, caz...with all this dreaming, you're never gonna get your tank filled! :) (I know from experience...check out how many threads I've started about potential tanks...)

I know...I was just kidding with you...
well thats a good idea man, I understand, now if you were like the guy dbcb on here lol man I'd be worried, im about ready to give that poor guy one of my tanks, he's totally enthused and you can tell he loves the hobby, but he just doesn't have adequate space. At least you are planning and not over doing yourself or the fish
i started my webpage, not much, but im hoping to get some more pics on there soon. any sugestions would be awesome :) www.angelfire.com/va3/caseyandlaura/fish_pictures.html

Salvini's can be very very nasty. When they claim an area it is usually a large one and they will do serious damage to anything that comes into this area. They almost seem to enjoy the torment they inflict.
This comes from my experience with them. I have seen them kill many different species of tankmates. Then in one instance my dominant 6 inch male was brought back to the store for a trade. They threw him in with a dominant 9 inch male texas that was also killing his tankmates. The third morning that the store opened. My salvini had not only killed the texas the night before but had eaten half of it also.
That fellow was the nastiest fish of the bunch that I owned and probably the meanest fish that I ever owned. The others were pretty bad too.
They start off fine but as they grow they get more and more pushy, until they have terrorized every other fish that it can push around. The ones that tend to fight back will usually fair better, but the salvini is relentless.
Certainly not a fish to go with most of your list caz.
thats where I heard that story from, I knew I heard a nasty salivi story from somewhere, you told us that in the pirahna thread about the most aggressive cichlid. Sounds pretty **** mean

They are beautiful fish , I haven't experienced them being aggressive or violent however they haven't fared well in my tanks - a bit tender perhaps or maybe it was a weak strain.
They tended to like a lot of caves and pick at a variety of smaller foods since they have smaller mouths.
I believe that if you have adequate space and lots of structure you can curb the aggression of most fish - introducing them while young also helps.
A lot of aggression depends on the individual fish and the care it receives - just look at dogs.
According to the latest reclassification by Kullander the genus Nandopsis is reserved for the haiti and cuban cichlids while the salvini is back in the cichlosoma while awaiting future assignment.
Oh and 6 inches is a good measure for the salvini - you may get the occasional fish that gets bigger but 6 is a good max.

Sounds like you might want to rethink the Salvini, caz.
will blue acaras and cons go together?
yes I believe so, Tightdog has some together on here in a 55 and as far as I know that seems to be going well, I'd assume they would anyway.

According to www.mongabay.com they are compatible. That site is fairly conservative when it comes to matching compatible fish, so I'd guess that this is surely okay.
sweet im off to the fish store to place my order
i think im gonna get a pair of blue acaras, and a pair of convicts, maybe a salvini

Wait, what? You're going to order something...? :)
J/K, and best of luck!!!
ok orders in, a pair of cons, and a pair of blue acaras, and a tilipia, i know i havent done much research on these, but they seem to work out ok. i will get the scientific name. now to decorate my tank
what plants should i get? something that grows in low light, hard to kill :).
what should i do for rocks? i like next to lake champlain, should i get some rocks out of there, and perhaps a freshwater clam or two?
right now, the tank has standard size gravel, should i get some other polished peices of shale that i can find in the lake to put in there with the gravel?
any other suggestions would be killer :) thanx guys
oh yeah, all fish are gonna be between 2 to 3 inches, and also im getting a pair of redbelly flag cichlids for my community tank

How can you tell if the clam is alive? You can't easily enough to make it worthwhile...you'll know once decomposition has set in to an amount, but until then, it's next to impossible. Plus, clam larvae are fish parasites.
You could probably get rocks from the lake, but sterilize 'em first!

Tilapia eat plants.
You don't want to put forth the effort to keep plants in that tank.
so no clam from the lake then huh? i was just gonna get one freshwater clam they arent asexual are they? do they really need caves that they can swim through, or just some nice sized rocks?
oh yeah got any info on tilipia? when ever i google it it always comes up as tilipia fillets for sale and i dont want that

Just google for Tilapia brevimanus, macrocephala, melanoplura, mossambica, nilotica, zilli, buttikorferi or mariae.
good luck, Jimmy

Seratherodon or Oreochromis might be a little better of a search as they aren't often named in fish marked for consumption.
