So here is where I'm at, I have just gotten my 55gal long (48"X13"X19") past the leak test, found where it will be placed in the apartment and it really is in the best possible spot. except for one thing, there will not be enough room to hang the filters on the back like you normally would, some of the filters will have to be on the side, and herein lies my question...
since it is a long tank, if I have a emperor 280 on one side and a power filter on the other, will this filter the water as good as if it was on the back in the middle of tank, or could a powerhead help to mix the water around allowing the filters to be affective on the ends instead of the middle? any input on this would be greatly appreciated!

Normally there placed in or around the corners, but on the ends will work also, it sounds like you dont have a choice, a canister fillter would work if there is enough room for hoses to go up the back...:)

I have a similar situation - not a 55G, but 29G. Works just peachy for me to have a AC500 on the side - there is a powerhead in there too, but this is more for current, and I think you will be fine.

Powerheads are cheap for security and peace of mind.

Good Luck

I had a similar problem with my 55gal. It's a room divider, visible from both sides. I tried a HOT filter on each end, but it wouldn't work with my cover and lights. I ended up using cannister filters with the hoses going up the sides. The intakes are on one end, outlets on the other, for cross flow.

thank you for the input. the best part* about my tank so far is that I only have the tank, light w/no hood, and pretty much nothing else besides about 7 air pumps.

*its the best part because i've had a lot of fun trying to figure out what would work the best for my little albino red tails...(3 of them)

wow, 7 air pumps!?! you like bubbles!!

well it was thrown in with the 55gal I just purchased.
(some of them are old, lol. all boxey like it was built in the 80's!)
