Specific Names: Managuense (Jaguar), Dovii (Dow's Cichlid, Wolf Cichlid), Loisellei, Friedrichsthali (was Cichlasoma multifasciatum), Motaguensis/Motaguense.
In addition, there is one Guapote whose generic name is not in doubt--the Bay Snook (Petenia splendida).

I have a great article about this at
guapotes article (http://www.cichlidae.com/articles/a092.html)
reading through it it seems that parachromis and parapentia species are closely related, two branches of the guapotes i think. Some species that seem diffrently specialized were changed from parachomis too parapentia, he doesnt mention which were changed though.
does anyone know the most uptodate names for these guys??
ps they are AWESOME fish :D

Don't forget Petenia in that grouping...the subgenus Parapetenia means like Petenia, and is meant to show that these fish are really similar to the Snook, though not exactly the same.

I keep hearing that the best fish-fighting in Florida is (for non-natives, at least):
1.) Peacock Basses (Cichla spp.)
2.) Mayans ("Cichlasoma" urophthalmus)
3.) Oscars (Astronotus spp.)
4.) Tilapia spp. and close relatives
I can't imagine that catching a Guapote would be any walk in the park, though...yikes!
Good articles, demon_surfer!

They can't even spell some of the genera correctly...the authors are too confused, too! :)

what they need to do is get all the scientist studying the taxonomy together and work out a **** family tree and have it as the standard.
Is it just me or is it stupid to have a genus like-snook? either they are of the genus petenia this seems to me like laziness. does all taxonomy work like this or is it just fish?

Jeff's site has a link to Kullander's home page. He's the guy in charge, for the most part, and most of the other people involved usually get shot down by him or do something radical and the Sven K. fans put them in "their place." I think that it's only in the Cichlids for the most part, but we'll see...
