Hello: I have a 55 gallon tank with African cichlids, mainly peacocks, and all male. Well, I think they are.

I have an otter point that is supposed to be a male, but is still a dark brown. It is about 2 inches long. I am wondering if it will take it awhile to color up? I don't think it is a female because none of the other males are interested in it. I am feeding New Life Cichlid Formula.

I have 10 peacocks and 4 yellow labs. Is my tank complete, or can I add a few more peacocks?

Thanks!

Denn

Is there any way to post pix of your cichlids.....:)
and you are probably at your limit on your fish, since peacocks can range from 4-6", and yellows can get up to almost 6", and the otter point peacock can get up to 6 inches also...

btw here is a pix of a male OPP...does yours have fins like this one???is so it is a male

does yours have fins like this one???is so it is a male...or if rounded it is a female...

if you want to get some more OPP, you can take some of the other peacocks to the LFS and get a couple more OPP...
all male cichlids have longer dorsal fins that are points and the end and longer pelvic and anal fins...anal fins are pointed on the male also...female cichlids have rounded dorsal fins as with the anale fins are shorter and rounded also and with the pelvic fiins are shorter that the male....

Here are a few pics of my fish. The last 3 are of the fish in question. I also have 2 clown loaches that were in the tank before I switched to Africans. Everything gets along well, so I figured I would just leave them in there. :)

Thanks!

Dennis

Yup, the last 3 pix are definitely female...shorter anal and pelvic fins and a rounded dorsal fins...and it looks like she has only 1 big egg spot and a smaller egg spot....she is sure pretty though...and your males are handsome also...love the labs too...:)

Nice pics!

Oh, yeah I forgot:::great looking peacocks and labs....:)

Ok, now I have a female. Just what I really wanted. One female in a tank of males! LOL

I have heard over and over that cross breeding will take place and that Africans should be kept a specific species per tank to prevent this.

Right now, none of the males are interested in her. She is the queen of the tank. No one pushes the queen around. In fact, she is quite bossy. LOL

She is a very pretty fish, even if she is brown. Should I consider taking her back to the shop? I sure don't want something to happen to her or be run to death by the males.

Thanks for all your input. This group is great!
