I am setting up a new 20g Hex with a Fluval 204 canister (a little overkill maybe, but I wanted a clean look without a HOB filter). Anyway, I can take some gravel from my established 20g long to get the cycle started (I will also move 3 serpae tetras into the new tank, they are terrorizing and nipping the other occupants, they were purchased 2 years ago to cycle my current tank and I am sorry I got them!) Anyway, should I put the gravel in the tank itself (along with all the new gravel) OR do I put it in the Fluval to supplement the biological media that comes with the Fluval?

I've never heard of putting used gravel in a filter...I usually hear of people putting it below a small layer of virgin gravel in a new tank...

i supose it would work if you put it in the filter but i would just put it in the tank casue its easier and you dont want to mess up the impeller if some gravel or other chunks of debris are in there.
