My tank is now cycling. My LFS gave me a few cups of live sand with ammonia mixed in. He told me to take out that stinky rotten shrimp and use that instead. Man that thing stunk!

Anyway, now that my tank has started the cycling process, I'd like to begin researching a stock list. Here's a list of fish I like:

Dwarf Lion
SF Eel
Butterfly fish
Blennies
Gobies
B/W Clownfish
Peppermint Shrimp
Hermit Crabs
Snails
Chocolate Chip Starfish
Spotted Mandarin

I am assuming the shrimp would be a snack for the eel and/or lion. If so, what kind of cleaning crew would be appropriate for the lion and eel?

Would any of these other fish be ok with the lion and eel?

I obviously won't add all these fish at once, but I'd like to plan this correctly so I don't regret my stock list later.

Thanks!

I'd avoid stocking the mandarin and any smaller gobies / blennies with the lion. A large, adult mandarin might be ok with a small dwarf lion, but I wouldn't put a small mandarin in with a dwarf lion. Mandarins are slow moving stalkers and would be easy prey for the lion. Smaller gobies / blennies wouldn't be so good either if they are small enough for the lion to eat.

It sounds like the lion is going to prevent me from getting many of the others I am interested in. What about the SF Eel?

Yes, shrimp and crab are natural food for an eel. Eels are also GREAT escape artist. THe tank must be covered completely.
Also a mandarin needs a VERY mature tank to survive (6month to a year after tank set up).

Sounds like I'm going to have a hard time finding a cleaning crew that will live with a lion or eel.

I will stick with the others on my list then. Maybe find a few more peaceful species as the tank matures. I'll also hold off on the mandarine until the tank matures more and I gain more experience in the marine area.

Thanks!
