i read somewhere that a wild-caught large cichlid like an oscar or green terror would not be as much of a "water puppy" as a tank-bred specimen would be. does anyone know if this is true? if i was to buy/special order a 4+ inch green terror at my lfs would it most likely be wild caught or tank bred?

thanks.

There is not as much competition in the tank to survive. In nature fish are forced to be aggressive to survive. So I'd assume that you got the right idea.

I have wild Peruvian Scalare.

while I find them to be a bit more aggressive..I often find them to be in 'stealth' mode.

most of my wild stock, hide among the plants and wait for food.

not sure what you get from a special order unless you can specify a wild caught.

My friend would get wild cichlids...

They were a lot more timid, prefered to hide, and a lot more sensitive to the water parameter's.

I would think most deffinatly that a wild caught cichlid would be would be more aggressive and defensive than a tank bred cichlid, for the fact of it being wild... da.... but i'd also expect the fish to be more timmid due to the fact that its no longer "free"..... but i would believe that once the cichlid got used to his new enviroment then he would break loose and take control...

i say, to anyone with a cichlid tank, get all your fish at once, the rest is food!! :)

i would think that wild caught cichlids would be more aggressive (for obvious reasons) because they have to get there own food, they have to fight for survival.

Most fish including new world cichlids are tank or pond bred either here in the United States or overmseas. There are not many wild caught cichlids comming from Central or South America andif yo do get them they will probably cost a lot more that a domestic bred fish of the same species.
