Ewwww. How interesting, they're above the water line.
Why is your water so low?

AWESOME! keep us posted.
Why is your water so low?
Q
the water is low probably to facilitate the snail's egg-laying, since mystery snails require an above-water area to lay their eggs or else the eggs will 'drown'.

Oh, that's great! Soon you'll have some real itty bitty baby mysteries, instead of the poseur pond snails!

Yep, you've got it. The lowering of the water level encourages the snails to lay the eggs, like mine did, on the side of the tank instead of under the lights where the eggs will eventually dry up from being burned.

You're so smart. My snail has been cruising around by the top lately... wonder if it's looking to lay eggs? :eek3:
I have one snail that likes to cruise straight down the side and will loosen up near the bottom and drop to the gravel. Once though it started to drop from near the top and stuck back on near the bottom. It was just too cool.
Sadly one of my snails got stuck between the heater and the corner of my tank and died. That one never really seemed healthy too but I'm sure it died because it was stuck.

Does it look like it should? I know they're supposed to darken up, and it looks like it is. =) This is my first clutch, I hope it hatches!!

i used to have 3 golden apple snails (and 1 blue one) and they would constantly mate and lay eggs above the water line. I would sometimes save a few large clutches and wait weeks for them to hatch but they never did. Here are some tips from a fellow user gena575 on apple snail egg care:
"Yes you can leave them where they are. You could also gently remove them and place them in a diy hatchery if you are a control freak like me My diy hatchery consisted of 4 strips of styrofoam and a square of plastic craft canvas siliconed together to make a little clutch raft. (www.applesnail.net has lots of ideas in their DIY section) I floated that in a lidded square tupperware. I put that on my light strip so it would stay nice and warm. It took from 13 days for them to hatch IIRC. You'll notice a moldy gross look to the clutch when they are nearing hatching. Ah heck, lemme just post some pictures This clutch was mailed to me so it is 2-3 days old in the first pic."

that going to be alot of snails :D
Becca, do the Snails go well with Tetra's, a weather loach, and a stick pleco? The blue mystery snail looks neat.
Becca3711

no loaches. The loaches will try to eat and will torment the poor thing.

Very nice. Where are you keeping them all? Are they all in your 10 gallon? Can you tell what colours they all are yet? I saw a betta very similar to yours in Walmart yesterday and was tempted but didn't give in (yet!).
Hey! I just found a egg "sac" in the hood! WOOOOOOOOOO! I'm gonna have cute little babies too!!!!!

I've been trying for months to get a clutch like yours. Congrats, I absolutely love Mystery snails. I have a 20 gallon with 10 full growns, its a snail paradise (only well fed snails). I'm almost to the point of ordering a clutch from somewhere. If anyone has some Golden clutches I'm in Southern Illinois, PM me.
Becca, Congrats!
I am in Eastern MO, Can I buy some from you? or do you always use aquabid.
will they all be blue?
how do mystery snail eggs become fertilized?
 boohoo, the egg sac was infertile.

Those are the cutest things. Love those! I had gold mystery snails. They laid eggs a few times but nothing ever hatched. How long does it take to hatch? I have an overabundance of trumpet snails so I bought a loach to eat them. So no more apple snails for me.

Here's an updated photo of my little snail that I am keeping. I tried sexing it today, and think it's a she. Im calling her Tia. She has about 10or so brothers and sisters left from a newer clutch, so they are very tiny still. They will probably be ready to ship in a couple of weeks. They are blue also.

At one point I was getting a clutch every night, some of them were about 3 inches long. I had WAY too many snails. I have not had many fertile clutches since papa snail died. He must have been a pimp.
your snails shell looks very thing in the pic above...

very cool :)
i must say though, the sac was sooo gross looking but now we all know if we see one not to go "OMG GROSS" and wipe it off (lol).
those babies are so awesome! i love them.
would the shell just be thin since its a baby though? i mean, it hasn't really had time to thicken yet correct?
Becca3711
07-31-2007, 2:26 PM
correct. Tia is also growing very fast, so that is also why, the shell's thickness just has to catch up w/itself I guess you could say.
