Severum tend to be a bit skittish. It's not just the mere sight of you walking into the room. The vibrations of you walking probably are being felt as well.

When you walk into the room, they see you and think they are getting fed. So they try to swim to you to get food. But they run into the aquarium wall instead. They then also see their own reflection at the same time. Them smacking into the wall and seeing their own reflection at the same time leads them to think they are being attacked, so they run and hide.

Actually I have no idea why they are doing that. But if I were a fish, that's what would happen to me.

How long have you had the fish?

None of my sevs do anything like that... exactly opposite... they calmly swim to the lid hoping for food...

I have two tanks in my living room the fish in my 30g dont bat an eyelid (probably because they dont have any:lol: ) even when my kids are jumping around infront of the tank, But my fish in the 125g run for the hills if i go anywhere near the tank:wtf: . My silver dollars are very skittish they zoom round the tank bumping into anything in there way this starts a chain reaction even my salvini goes and hides. This knee jerk reaction also happens when the lights go on and sometimes when i go to feed them. What really niggles me is one of the fish i moved from the 30g to the 125g has started to follow suit:mad2: .

I'd really have to see a pic of the tank to make a call, but I suspect there's not enough cover for them to feel safe. If fish from the 30 are doing the same thing once moved, it's the tank not the fish.

I have a new pair of babies, around 3", and as they are acclimating they sometimes freak out like that, bashing about. They're in a quiet room, next to my bed, and are gradually getting used to me. I try to get their attention and be very mellow when I approach them.
Strangely enough, my year-old Sev has never exhibited such behavior. He was much younger when he came home, and is with tankmates that were close in age when I put them together.

Nice looking tank, i'd have to agree with not enough cover.
