I am so stupid... I was feeding my brother's bristlenoses when I supposed that they would like sweet potato (I read it on Plecofanatics).
I blanched it and prepared it as I would cucumber and zucchini and left it in the tank overnight, they seemed to really enjoy it.
In the morning the tank was thick and cloudy:wall:, the fish were all gasping for air at the surface, my brother got reeeealy angry. We did a quick 1/2 wc because we had to get to school and my brother didn't want to be late, all of the fish seemed fine after the change but I'm anxious because my dad left the light on. Was that bad move #2? Will that cause algal blooms?

I'm really sorry to my brother and the fish, it was stupid of me, now he doesn't trust me near the tank.

Doing a 50% wc should'nt cause an algee bloom, even if the light was on 20 hours for a day, cut it back alittle the next day or leave it off but it should be ok.......:)

And plecos do love sweet potato, it just fouls the water. It'll be ok, just go easy on em for a bit till your brother cools off.

Should I leave it in overnight like I do cucumber? Or should I take it out really early after about three hours so it doesn't foul it up?

I leave it overnight (actually, I leave it til it's gone) but I am feeding pieces (maybe 1/4th to 1/8th of the full potato) in a 90 gallon tank with 4 hungry plecos. It lasts a while, but since they are eating the surface fairly consistently, there are no surfaces which are breaking down in the water for a long time. In addition, I use raw, I imagine blanched would muck the water faster, although I'm not certain.

I bet they'd love it with a little brown sugar, some butter and salt! yum!

I wouldn't blanch the sweet potato. It's a very soft cell structure.

take it out and do a couple water changes.

I did a 1/2 after I saw it and a 1/3rd the day later.
I think that blanching sweet potato probably made it more susceptible
to being broken up easily, for now I'm going back to basics, just zucchini cut up finely
(1 slice into three pieces for the three bristles)
