do convicts need caves necessarily, or just structure?

ChilDawg

Structure probably, but caves in the form of broken flower pots wouldn't be a terrible idea.

Then, if they aren't sharp, they would work.

the pillars are just made out of a hard plastic

Go for it, then! :) (Just make sure that they can't fall on the fish.)

If you have a female she'll love you for having a clay flower pot in her home :)

Shouldn't that last smiley be a wink? ;)

That is true...female Cons do tend to like their privacy for some strange reason. ;)

Clay flowerpots are some of the best decorations for cichlid tanks , cons like most other cichlids will love them.

Clay flower pots are great, but the key issue is a small space the female con can either hide in or have more maneuverability in to beat the crud out of the male from time to time!

That's how my pair in a 20 long solved their problems. I rearranged the tank, put in several smaller cave structures, and to my surprise they helped the female because she could swim around in the smaller caves whereas the male could get in but not maneuver well.

Now, he respects her and they're doing great.:D

ok well my blue acaras and convicts came, they are all supposed to be the same size. the blue acaras are about 3.5 inches long and are all beat up, and the convicts are tiny! maybe 1.5 inches
he is keeping the acaras for a few days, to see if they look better, so i have to wait a few more days to get my fish :(

Hope that you get them soon, caz! It is best, though, to wait for that which is best for your tank!

with the acaras and convicts go together even though the convicts are half the size of the acaras? i will keep the acaras, but i can order different convicts, its just that the acaras are a little beat up, so he wants to keep them for a few days so he doesnt sell me bad fish.

That might be the best route...the way that he has them right now. Aren't Blue Acaras kind of wimps when compared to Cons?

Very much so.

So get the Acaras a little larger b/c they'll have some territory by the time the Cons mature. This little mix-up may work to your advantage.

yes thats what my lfs said as well. although 4 three inch fish will probably get along failry smoothly in a 75 gallon, but i will get the smaller ones anyways, just because they look nicer. also can i get any bottom feeders for the tank or no?

i got 2 small convicts, and a tulipia. they seem kinda scared when i walk by the tank and dont scramble to the surface looking for some food like i thought they would. what can i do to help them feel more comfortable?

optix

dithers :) top dwellers will make the con's feel more secure. My eventually got used to it because I didn't really want to add any top dwellers but they are still skittish about feeding so its a quick dart to the top and haul *** back down. The female is a lil more brave as she will tend to stick around some times up top.

any suggestions on some top dwellers? i got a spotted raphael for the bottom, and i will be getting blue acaras soon.

caz

optix
06-01-2003, 4:09 PM

caz
06-01-2003, 4:30 PM
those might be cool. i like zebra danios though, but i guess they would be too small huh?

optix
06-01-2003, 4:46 PM
nah if you like zebra's go with them. They would actually fair better than the giants would I think.
