I am close to setting up my 30G FOWLR (soon to be reef) tank.

  1. I will be using a 20G sump, this is my "filter" processing area - yes? In it will be LR+LS and possibly a type of algae plant - correct?
  2. How much light is needed in the sump to promote growth for the algae, looking at Chaetomorpha Algae. The actual area of "processing" about about 8"x8" or so.
  3. Types of live rock - is one better than other? Looking at Marshall, Tonga and Fiji. Or is it looks that rule the choice for the most part.
  4. I am looking at 40lbs for the 20G and maybe 10lbs rubble for the sump, or do I need to adjust amounts?
  5. If I get uncured LR, can I use the die off to cycle the tank, or should I also do a fishless cycle? Which is quicker?
  6. Any words of advice?

Thanks!

Aries

3. Each locale of rock has its perks. I'm sure everyone has their favorites. There's no reason not to have a combination either. Just pick what you like.

5. The die off from uncured LR will just create a nasty mess. I'd avoid it.

It will act as part of your filter area. This area will be mainly for exporting nitrates and phosphates aswell as being addition the the live rock in the display tank ( which is you main source of filtration )..You can add either Caulerpra or Chaeto macro alage as your algae plant...

How much light is needed in the sump to promote growth for the algae, looking at Chaetomorpha Algae. The actual area of "processing" about about 8"x8" or so.

Sump lighting needs to be something like 1 or 2 6700K T8 bulbs...

I think its down to personal preference whether you use Fiji, indo, tonga or aquacultured...

Personally, i would loose 10lbs from the display, sump should be good...

If I get uncured LR, can I use the die off to cycle the tank, or should I also do a fishless cycle? Which is quicker?

Yes you can use the die off, i would also suppliment the ammonia source with a raw shrimp or prawn..Do a fishless cycle, its inhumain to put the fish through the ammonia that will be generated.....There is no need to be rushing the cycle, let it run its own course and let mother nature take a hold naturally...

Any words of advice?

Patience and research

Hope that all helps a little
