I am upgrading my lighting next week only I can't decide on 175 MH w/NO supplement or 96w pc powerquad w/40w of NO. I am currently only housing softies but am interested in a few LPS, there are no plans for SPS or clams in this tank, so I am thinking the halide may be more than I really need. Am I right?

Yep--but if the price is right, I'd go for the MH anyway, since you might change your mind down the line.

It's been my experience that softies like halides too. You'll see better expansion and more rapid growth.

If the price is right I would opt for the halide.

One thing to remember about MH is heat. They can heat a tank, particially a small tank. The also burn badly if you have children.

Heat can be an issue for smaller tanks. But can easily be overcome.

With care, and good sense nobody should have to suffer a burn from a metal halide.

Personally, I'd go for the MH - you probably won't be sorry. You'll get better growth/expansion and those shimmering light strikes on the rock and sand are awesome! I recently upgraded to a 2x250 MH setup and I can't believe I didn't do it sooner - looks much more like a reef tank now.

A small fan would probably take care of the heat issue.
