Hi All
I purchased the most beautiful eel about two months ago. The guy at the LFS claimed it to be an Electric Eel. I have been unable to find any information about such an eel in saltwater. However, there is a plethora of info on the freshwater electric eel- which has no similarity to mine in any way, shape, or form (is not in fact a true eel).

Back to my question, the eel I have is 10-12" long, with fairly slender body type- in fact- he is physically very similar to my snowflake in girth, lenth, head/jaw size, etc.. His coloration is a dark purple, with a flourescent green stripe that runs the length of his body, and actually outlines the end of his tail to the ventral side. He lacks the huge jaws of dragon morays, and is most similar in body type to a snowflake.

He exhibits no aggression to his tankmates and is eating well- anyone have any ideas or resources?? Thanks for any help you might give me...

Wow, that was a fact that I wanted to share about the FW Electric Eel. From what I can find, there is no SW Electric Eel. The "Electric" nature of your fish might have to do with the stripe.

I've never seen a purple eel...can you give us a pick? Try looking at www.fishindex.com They have alot of pics. And don't talk to the LFS guy that says it's a saltwater electric eel, unless you found out it does give an actual charge. Bad news either way...

Possibilities (looked purple):
Gymnothorax fimbriatus
G. gracilicaudata
G. hepaticus

Too many Gymnos. I didn't get much past Hepaticus...hopefully one of those three is it.
