I acquired a 4" long red bay snook cichlid. I suspect this fish was fed exclusively feeder fish by its previous owner. I've had it about one week and still it will only eat small fish. I tried feeding frozen brine shrimp, but it was not to its liking. It tried one, and then would not eat the rest. I'm starting to think the food has to be alive. Which will present me with a slight dilemma.
It ate ten, 1" long platies. I don't think I have the facility to be able to supply ten platies per day. So I'm considering hatching brine shrimp. Perhaps it will eat the shrimp it they're alive.

Off the top of my head, I can't think of any other live food that is easier to make than brine shrimp. Any suggestions? Pond minnows perhaps (I'm a teacher and have access to kids who might not mind catching minnows).

How often does a typical predatory cichlid need to eat per week? I haven't had to worry about that since I was able to train my previous carnivores to eventually take cichlid sticks. I'm not sure if I'll be successful with this one. It's also possible that the fish was wild-caught.

Yep, starve it for a couple days and don't give in! You can also try fresh jumbo shrimp that has been diced up (I bought a bunch, chopped it up and then froze it). I'm not familiar with the red snook, is it a new world species or african ?

yes best way would be no food form like 3 or 4 days then try to give him some pellets or frozen foods, if he doesnt eat then give some feeders, then wait a few more days and try again.
