I have recently onverted one of my FW to SW with live rock. I have the essential marine equipment running, but I am not sure what to do with the Eheim canister I had running on it previously? Should I run this with any specific media, or include the coarse/fine sponges? matrix? noodles?
Canister filters will increase your nitrate levels if there is any media inside. Most people remove all the media and just use them for circulation. You can run carbon if necessary, but the noodles, sponges, etc. will cause a rise in nitrate levels. If you're running a deep sand bed and have enough live rock, that'll be all the filtration you need. HTH
