I have a 29 gallon tank and I think I have a problem with the way I have it set up for cichlids. I have natural color gravel with two pieces of artificial driftwood and some artificial plants. I was looking at getting one Pundamilia nyererei species. The way I have things situated in my tank, they for many hiding spots. It is my set up suitable for this species or for any species of cichlids. If this species will not do. What species would be good for this kind of set up.
They are beautiful fish aren't they.
But keep in mind they can be very, very aggressive
One Pundamilia nyererei is going to be a lonely P.N.
He will not tolerate any other fish in this/his tank.
Why not go with a couple of Shell dwellers
They’re not that big and there’s lots of species to choose from.
If it was me, I’d create some rocky caves and put some nice shells in and go with the shellies.

I would really like to have a male P/N. What other species would you recommend so that he would not be lonely? Or would it be better to stick with 1 male and 1 female P/N?
1 fish 2 fish

Do you mean it likes company, but also needs its own space?
I've heard shell dwellers are very interresting. From what I've heard , I would recommend them also.
What I meant was, one Pundamilia is just one Pundamilia.(no problem to go with that)
I’m not sure whether it is your first tank setup, but I guess sooner or later you would like to add some more fish to your tank. and that is simply not going to work, because by that time the male will be pretty much considering this tank to be its own.
If you decide to go with the Pundamilia, make sure you create lots of hiding places and don’t give him just one female but at least 2, this will split-up his aggression/attention.
Adding one female would not be a good idea, in the event they don’t like each other it will be chased and harassed till it’s exhausted or even killed.
I don’t think this will help you much to decide what to do, but I do hope, however, it’ll give you an idea what to expect.
But still, I would go with the Shellies.
P.S. The P/N won't accept other species in its domain/this tank.
