Hey I just caught a mudfish out of my lake and now have it in a 10 gal aquarium. If you have any info or tips on rasing them,Email me at Bassmasterchs@aol.com I would really appreciate your help! Thank you!!
Bowfin arent commonly kept as aquatic pets so i dont know if anyone will have any advice based on experience keeping them, however i know the fish your talking about and know that they are ravinous eaters and get quite large, Id say a two hundred gallon tank or atleast 150 gallons will be needed for the adult fish. He will probably like plants as they come from marshy planted areas of lake and streams, resist the temptation to feed him feeders all the time, every once in a while will be ok. Also im not sure how entirely legal it is to keep a wild fish. maybe you should contact the local fish and game to see. Good luck.

it is totally legal to keep the fish, as long as you caught it by legal means. since it is a local fish, 74* is the max(absolute max) temp i would suggest for the tank. they grow very large. you will need at least a 240 gal, and that will not house it its entire life. you will need about a 500 gal to house the adult. for feedings i would suggest earthworms, beef heart, crayfish, and the such. you might get lucky and get it to eat some floating pellets. you wont find many tankmates to go with it. here is a link to another site that has several "other" fish owners:

good luck and have fun with it.

www.nanfa.org is also a great resource for keeping native fish.
Just because it is legal in some states to keep a fish if collected via legal means, this is not the case for all states. Many states have restrictions on the live transport and keeping of native/wild species. Wyoming is one of them.
