would that work in a 55g?

i'm looking for some combo's for my new tank I'm setting up.

i want more than 3 fish...but don't want a community tank(tetra's..guppies and all that crap)

what else could i go with?

the tank setup you described should be fine. if the any of the fish pair up them you may have a problem, but other than that you should be fine. be careful is what im trying to say i guess and keep an eye on them.

my brother got 3 cons, 2 firemouths and a blue acara in a 55g, hes gonna take out 1 of the cons and maybe 1 firemouth soon, but its a tank that always looks nice except the fact that there are no fish at the top of the tank.

I'd be cautious with that setup, Salvinis are ambush predators. Some you will find tame. Some you will find down right nasty

Indeed. You could always add a school of giant danios to occupy the upper levels...they make good dither fish.
