Does anyone here use this? My mother got it by mistake (she was supposed to get tetra aquasafe, but the people at walmart gave her this and told her it is basically the same as aquasafe). I use well water, Im just going to use it in a tank that I plan on adding rams to, I feel safer adding water conditioner with more touchy fish. From what Ive read it does the same thing as most water conditioners, including aquasafe. What are your thoughts?

Do a search on this subject. I posted a question about this last week. Basically, measure the amount, mix it with a little tank water in a small container, and then add it to the tank. I accidentally killed a couple of pikes years ago with a similar product. I dumped the full-strength measured amount in the tank, the pikes were directly underneath where the additive hit the water, and they died. This is two separate incidents. I cannot claim the slime coat stimulant was the reason, but I definitely advise you to be careful. This is no evidence for sure, but it never hurts to be careful.

I saw your thread about that. I used some of the conditioner in my 20 high about 2 hours ago, put in enough for the whole tank (since it didnt have any at all in it). I put it in my bucket and let the water from the tap mix it up. The fish are doing fine.

Wow - Start Right has been around more than 23 years - that I know.... I used it way back then and it seemed ok.. :)

I remember selling Start Right as early as 1965.
It was blue granules and not the liquid they have now.

I've never used this. Can anyone who's familiar with Jungle Start Right tell us what it's ingredients are?

In marketing, blue is a color denoting purity. Was the blue in the crystals a dye?

Not a clue about the ingredients- but the color was beautiful ;)
When I got back into aquarium keeping one of the first products I ordered was a big bottle of Start Right- for the nostalgia as much as anything else. When it arrived and I saw it was a different formulation I wa so disappointed I nearly cried.

Don't sell the stuff because it is Wal Marts favorite. It only removes certain things, maybe only chlorine, I can't remember. You can get other products that are more concentrated, more bang to the buck, like Prime which removes several things and is one drop per gallon. Or products like Novaqua that remove several things, and they typically require like a capful to 5 or 10 gallons. You always want to make sure that you treat the new water first, then add it to the tank. Less risky. The fish could die just from being exposed to untreated water. I could see the fish swimming into the drops and it causing them to die later, so I guess adding it to some tank water first is best.

maybe the blue color is like the blue they put in laundry detergent to make your clothes look whiter, "optical whiteners" they're called. Blue water is clean water, you know.... lol

Whenever I had well water, I didn't see the need to add any conditioners to my tank. Then, I didn't have copper or sulfur or any other exotic substances in my tap water, so your experience may differ slightly.

Prime is a good product, it's what my mother uses. Me? I'm a Stress Coat kinda gal. I've used Start Right before, but it was before I knew WHY you added these things to the tank, so I don't remember if it made a difference or not.

In the paper that comes in the box it says it removed chlorine, neutralizes copper and other harmful heavy metals, stops chloride shock, and adds beneficial electrolytes and will not change the pH. Stimulates the natural protective slime coat to help heal wounds and torn fins. Reduces stress.

I have kept my fish in this same untreated water for years, 2 of the fish I have now Ive had since I was 5 or 6 years old. The only reason I want to use the conditioner is because I will hopefully be adding rams to this particular tank, and using the conditioner will give me peace of mind.

Well you aren't the first person I've talked to that doesn't use water conditioners and you must have a really good water supply. If you are using municipal water I would at least test the tap water and see what it's got or doesn't have. Our water here contains lots of chlorine and ammonia and the pH is 8.0-9.0 right out of the tap so it takes some work. If the Start Right only removes chlorine, what about ammonia? So, I don't know. I'm paranoid and hate losing my fish, so I've been partial to Prime and now the new Marineland water conditioners. Someone mentioned using well water earlier and I live in farm country and wouldn't dream of using untreated well water. I guess it all depends on where you live. :)

My tap water reads 0 for ammonia, nitrite, and nitrate, pH is 7.6. No chlorine or chloramine for me, I use a well.
