im looking to starting a pond. probably around 500 gallons or so. could anyone tell me approximately how much this would cost from start to finish?
Well I am no expert. This is my second summer with my pond. You can see a picture of it in the post titled Raised Wooden Ponds.
Here is what I posted in that Post "Raised Wooden Ponds":
"I finally found my receipts for the pond. Grand total was $520.00. Wood and rebar was $125.00 and then the rest was for the liner, pump, filter, a light, tubing and fountain. That doesn't even include plants or fish.
Last August I found a UV at a petstore that was moving and everything there was 50 - 75% off. I ended up paying around $90 for the UV after the discount and mail-in rebate. Not Bad. I couldn't pass that one up."
There is no set limit on how much it can cost. It depends on how serious you are about the hobby, your location, what brands you are going to buy (tetra, beckett, etc..) I would recommend reading everything possible and research which types of filters, pumps, liners, etc. you would like to invest your money in.
Plan, plan, and plan some more. I spent probably 1 1/2 to 2 years saving money and planning how large I was going to build it, how I was going to build, as well as pumps, filters, plants, fish, etc...
I wrote down everything I could think of that I thought was needed to start building and wrote down an estimate cost of that product.
For example:
pump/ brand name/ size = cost
filter/ brand name/ size = cost
liner / brand name/ size = cost
etc....
Then that is what I based my savings on. I would set aside a certain amount just for the pond. Which is why I spent so much time planning. I wanted to be sure that I had everything I needed plus the money.

Yea, there's a huge difference in cost if you are building it yourself or getting someone else to help you out. 500 gallons is pretty huge so I think you might run quite a tab. At least 500$ is what you should be saving up.. I really think you might exceed that though..
