I'm speaking of swordtails and mollies, particularly, but in general as well, How long does it take for the babies to get big enough to put them back in the tank with their parents? (or till they're about the size they sell them in pet stores, 1 1/2 inches long)

Depends on how much you feed them. If you feed a good, heafty amount, they will grow faster. If you do feed them a lot however, make sure you clean the tank they are in often.

There are so many factors involved here an exact answer would be very hard to give. Swords and such under good tank conditions you could get them to a reasonable size in 6 to 8 months. Under great conditions perhaps 4 to 6 months. It will all depend on tank density, food types and number of daily feedings, water change schedule, temperature and of course genetics. If you have access to a pond it goes much faster and you get much nicer fish.

3 months and they should be beyond bite-size and can be put back in with the adults.

Pet shops will not usually take them until they are full grown with adult colors, swords etc. that usually takes at least a year. Be patient.

When you put them back, give them plenty of cover(plants, especially floaters) til they get their bearings and acclimate themselves too.
