I want to breed some guppies but I have no idea how. I have a lot of questions to ask. How much tankage would be ideal? Fresh or salt water? How long does the whole process take? Water temperature? About how many times can a guppy breed in its lifetime?

my experience may not be within the "rules", but it worked for me. i just used a 10g, FW, room temp. it took about a month before i had babies. all i did was set up the tank like normal and only put guppies in, maybe it's more efficient/faster if take extra measures like adding salt or whatever. i don't know how many times a guppy can breed, but i'm sure it's a lot.

if you want to breed guppies successfully heres what you do.
Step 1. Put water in a tank
Step 2. put guppies of each gender in the tank (1 male to 3 females)

As mentioned, few things in this hobby are easier. Tank, water, filter, and food. Oh, plus guppies, with at least two times as many females. I also recommend some fine leaved plants as hiding places for the young. Optional, but makes for a prettier tank too.

lol yeah I was just teasing at ya, If you want to breed guppies seriously really all you have to do is get a decent filter at least a 5 gallon tank. Substrate isn't even a necessity really. Keep your water at around 78 degrees. With a male and a female you are pretty much guaranteed fry. I would prefer 2 females per male at least though.

Yebbut....... to breed guppies you'll need space to grow out the fry, tanks for virgin females, room to grow out the males, etc.
It all depends on whether you just want to make more fish or breed a distinct strain.
Good point. With my barbaric mind when I think of breeding guppies I think of feeding my cichlids:o. Wasn't thinking much on the lines of fancy guppies, Keep forgetting im not in the cichlid forum :p

Well if you want to breed for feeders I would use a bigger tank than my stated 5 gallon, I would use about a 20 gallon. 10 at least
