Nice shots, you had to be quick to get those. When my fish yawn it cracks me up. Actually, cichlids are the only fish that I've seen yawn, now that I think about it....

Cool pics Verse. I always seem to just miss that moment, or if I do catch it am not happy with the picture.

thanks. I was just focusing on one fish when I took those pics waiting for some action, and they delivered for me:p
I accidental bumped into an article about yawning the other day.
As I recall, it seems that nobody exactly knows the reason why they (or we) are yawning. It could be stretching their jaws but it might as well be for the same reasons we are yawning. For as far they could tell, it doesn’t seem to be something to worry about.
Perhaps it has something to do with regulating the osmotic pressure.
EDIT: The next explanations I've found on the net;
Non-verbal communications could be a possibility too.
When Siamese Fighting Fish are on their own, they hardly ever yawn. But if you put another Siamese fighting fish in the same tank, they will yawn 300 times more often. And once they are actually fighting, their yawning rate doubles again.
Yawning can also be a stress relief mechanism.
Releasing carbon dioxide build-up.
Well, your guess is as good as mine.
