what plants can I grow in a 5 gallon aquarium?

Try to stay with 'slow growers.'
Anubias Nana is one of them.. Look for small plants, and some low light plants. There are some good plant websites... Try a Google.com search, as I can't say which site is best.
I am having a lot of luck with good old water sprite in my 5 gallons. I added a screw in compact flourescent bulb to replace the incandescent mine came with though.

dwaef hairfrass and dwrf sag are good forground plant but they grow fast
