i just got into this whole saltwater thing a few months ago, but i am becoming obsessed with it especially with corals. I have 4 mushrooms and some white star polyps. So i woke up this morning and it looked like a spider webb coming off one of my chunks of live rock(8lb chunk). I read that some corals have defense mechanisms and also weapons used on other corals that look like this stuff i'm talking about, but i have no other corals. I look further and this rock is covered in this stuff and has trapped lots of sand particles(looks just like a cob web). I look closer and i see little white branches developing on this rock amost like a stoney coral, but it can't be because my lighting isn't THAT good yet and i have no stoney corals. WHAT"S UP!!!! Does anyone know what this stuff or the growing white branchy stuff is? Could i have gotten a hitchhiker on some shrooms or live rock i bought a few months ago and it just didn't show till now???

i get that happening in my tank when i disturb the sand doing water changes....These worm like things live in some of my rocks and seem to throw a line of thread like material to catch stuff.

It could also be a sponge. It takes them a while to get established sometimes ,"not enough bacteria for them to really start growing." I agree with the others though it's very likely some sort of worm and or sesile snail.
hth and it's probably harmless

The "cobwebs" sound characteristic of a vermetid snail (size can vary dramatically). They are sessile snails that use mucus to filter food particles from the water. The white "tree" sounds like some sort of foraminiferan, however, it may be a small sponge, as well.
