Free Live sand!!

I recently got my 40B from the petco sale and its currently halfway filled with RO/DI water that already premixed with Reef Crystals w/ a powerhead. A buddy of mine bought a 55G tank from his EX and sold all the livestock kept the LR and is selling the LS. He will give it to me if I want it. My "?" is:

Is this alright yo put in a new tank (kinda worried about not knowing where it came from or any potential parasites that It might have) he has 100lbs of it and that will surely bring my cost of setting up the tank down.


THe sand has also been submersed in water since Sat. (i think in buckets) so is it STILL LS??

Yes, it is live sand as that only really requires it to have bacteria. If you are going to do a fishless cycle it would take several weeks and any parasites should die off. The issue would be if he'd used copper based meds to treat for disease etc. I'd probably get it if you weren't in too much of a hurry to set up your tank and your buddy could verify that there were no potentially toxic meds that might have built up in the sand bed.

I'd only do used sand from a tank I know. If you know the buddy and feel he hasn't done stupid stuff to the tank then use it.
