Are my gH and kH levels too high for Africans?

Hello all,

I may be repeating myself a bit here but I did get finally get a chance to test my water again and the gH seems way to high to me. My fish are flashing against the rocks a bit and I'm wondering if it's because my gH is to high, all other parameters look fine to me. As always thanks for the help.

pH 8.0-8.2
ammonia=0
nitrite=0
nitrate=unchecked, ran out of test strips.
gH=16, seems way to high.
kH=9

Don, your GH is absolutely not a problem. Mine is around 400 ppm (or 22 degrees) and my africans love it. The water in the Rift Lakes has sometimes been called "liquid rock" due to its hardness, so I doubt your water's GH is the problem.

Are your fish showing any unusual behavior? Flashing is pretty normal, and unless they're showing other symptoms (e.g., excessive scratches around gills) I wouldn't worry too much.

Hey Jim,

Thanks as always for the reply. The fish look just fine, I don't see any visible signs of stress or disease and they are still eating like the little pigs that they are. They seem to be a little lethargic at times (not swimming around much) but other than that they seem to be fine. I guess I'll just keep a watchful eye on them. What is the ideal temperature range for them?

Thanks again,

Hi Don,

Your water-parameters are just great for Africans.
It’s exactly what Jim says. Even GH 22 would still be alright.

The ideal temperature range would be between 77 and 80.5 (25 and 27 Celcius)
That is the temperature I try to maintain in my tanks for several years now.

Jimmy

Jim,

Thanks for the advice. I believe my temperature is holding at around 81 degrees. I can't seem to get it below that unless I were to add a fan of some kind.

Thanks again,
